Community sensitization
UGANET carries out community awareness training workshops for its target groups in the 5 districts. The purpose of these workshops is to build community awareness on HIV/AIDS,, Human Rights and the law, empower community members in handling situations of human rights abuses and further act as advocates to deter reoccurrence of abuse in their areas of residence or jurisdiction of responsibility.
These community awareness training workshops bring together Local Council leaders, community members including orphans, widows, people with disability and people living with HIV/AIDS. Some of the Sub-counties that have been reached with this sensitization include Bwijanga sub-county in Masindi district, Amach and Lira sub-county in Lira, Kawempe and Lubaga divisions in Kampala district, Ihunga and Rubare sub-county in Ntungamo district and Apopong and Pallisa Town Council in Pallisa district.
The sensitization and training workshops are gender sensitive and the participants are educated on Human Rights, Will making, HIV/AIDS and the Law. Participants are also brought up to date on the current situations in Uganda in regard to HIV/AIDS and Human Rights violations.
As part of constitutional awareness, UGANET gives out copies of the Uganda Constitution to the LC 1 chairpersons of the sub-counties sensitized. The copies act as a reference to the village on Human Right issues.
Community sensitization is also done through airing radio programmes on local FM stations in the local languages. Questions raised by the participants in the community sensitization workshops are usually answered through these programmes by experienced resource persons who are drawn from the district probation and welfare office, district health services office and partner organisations.
